Simple Thought
It all began Saturday night as we watched the Christmas parade...snow...little sleet-like flakes blowing. I watched as people huddled together. The floats passed by. People walking along-side the parade were handing out tracts and candy. Christmas "cheer" was in the air. I felt like I was in one of those Christmas movies where we should all just break out any moment singing, "Walking in a Winter Wonderland". For a moment I wasn't thinking and almost did.
Frozen smiles and rosie cheeks could be seen on faces along the road. Frozen because of the cold air and snow. Again my mind wandered...how many of these faces hide hurts, pain, sorrow? Most of them I am sure. We often plaster a smile on our face in order to mask what is beneath. Our hearts cry on the inside. The faces along the road were difficult to see as it was night time. In our normal day, we can see faces. We can also see all of the stresses of that store clerk dealing with the difficult customer....or of that mom who is at wits end with a child. It could be that the one thing that would make their day would simply be a smile. Not a frozen, plastered smile; one of genuine sympathy. A smile that shows compassion. Next time you're out and about, I encourage you to encourage another simply with...a SMILE
