God Has His Reasons

When I was going into 9th grade my dad was moved from Flint (Carman-Ainsworth school district) to Grayling. In my eyes, Grayling was in the "sticks" and there was absolutely nothing to do in that little town.

I never questioned our moves because part of me liked the fact that I could always re-invent myself each time I moved...although my true self always became evident. I had no problems making friends and soon became known as "smiley". I was friendly with all; the burnouts (80's term), the "play" people (those in school plays), the jocks, the "intellects", etc.

Grayling High School didn't offer much to those students who needed more stimulation to the brain, so a couple teachers got together to start a class for students who were more driven and goal-oriented. The students pretty much invented their own course of study...individual studies.

A few of us did end up in the same classes...including this "gifted class"...as it was labeled. There was one student, Damon Thayer, who was extremely goal oriented and knew exactly what he wanted to do in his life. He was already that true conservative young Republican. Another student was Tim Moore. Tim was more quiet and the behind the scenes type. Damon was "out there"...outspoken yet well-liked.

I was only at Grayling high school for three years as my dad was moved to Titusville, PA my senior year. During my time in Grayling, I "endured" the "sticks". I spent most of my free time writing or reading. The cool thing was, God allowed me to become friends with all types of students. Sure I was frustrated while I lived in Grayling, but I may have been frustrated anywhere.

Life moved on. Years later Tim Moore became our State Representative and Caleb shadowed him for a day. Amazing! God let me meet Tim Moore 20 plus years ago and now my son was connecting with him. I connected with friends from years gone by in facebook. Damon Thayer has met his goals and is now State Senator in Kentucky. We are keeping in touch and he is excited about Caleb's goals to be in politics now and in the future. Damon and I were pretty good friends in Grayling and I am encouraged that this friendship continues.

God had His reasons for my living in Grayling. Who knows but Him if it was for my son, Caleb, to connect with these two conservative politicians. I have always liked Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, Plans to give you a hope and a future." Father truly DOES know best!
